Our history
Mango Learning was established as an extension of DR LEARNING. Dorothy Ross started DR LEARNING as a compassionate tutoring company after her 35 years of experience teaching in public schools. Dorothy specialized in the Direct Instruction (DI) model of teaching that uses examples and sequences to provide students with clear information and opportunity to learn. Because of her compassion and excellence in tutoring, word spread and the company grew to having five tutors encompassing from elementary to high school and sometimes post secondary tutoring covering multiple subjects.
In 2024, as Dorothy entered into a second retirement, she passed the baton to Gail Kelso, one of the tutors. Gail humbly accepted the baton to continue the work of helping and encouraging the students and their families in their learning journey. And so Mango Learning was established in July 2024.
about direct instruction
Direct Instruction (DI) is a model of teaching based on the work of Zig Engelmann. Examples and sequences provide students with clear information and opportunity to learn.
The content is usually organized around "big ideas" so that learning can be accelerated and efficient. In a typical lesson, you will see teacher led instruction with rapid pacing, and frequent responses. The teacher follows a very detailed lesson plan with over 30 years in development and testing. Every Direct Instruction program has been tested, retested, and undergone multiple revisions in an attempt to make the communication as perfect as possible.
Engelmann maintains that if a child doesn't learn, the teacher hasn't taught and that an individual is capable of learning anything we are capable of teaching. DR LEARNING embraced these ideas and used Direct Instruction programs and principles exclusively for elementary-aged students.
Mango Learning has separate tutors that instruct using Direct Instruction and traditional approaches.
